Dr. Charlebois, Again you have woken some concerned taxpayers in Canada with this disgusting revelation.
I can truly say your educational reports on our food supply has given me the courage to no longer sit quietly listening to the uneducated. I now stand and give a confident response all thanks to reading your substack.
The Minister of Agriculture is a former tourism business operator from PEI with zero knowledge about agriculture but Carney figures PEI is still a mostly agrarian province so it’s secured a seat. His name is Heath MacDonald. Email: aafc.minister-ministre.aac@agr.gc.ca
Heath also happens to be the MP for the riding where I live. I sent an email about this to him as well as to then interim Premier of PEI Bloyce Thompson who (by strange coincidence) is a dairy farmer. I suggested donating milk and/or milk products to food banks. Neither of them replied. Unfortunately, that's typical on PEI.
After stories like this hit the news, I often get calls at the food bank asking what can be done to get this milk to those who need it. My answer for years has been that there is no system or system capacity for processing "surplus" milk, and folks need to reach out to the Minister of Agriculture. From your post, that seems to still be true?
I have been at the food bank for almost 17 years, and that has been the answer offered the whole time. It's hard to understand that over all those years, there has been no interest in expanding processing capacities for Canadian dairy?
I have wondered for years why the surpluses couldn't be used to create milk powder (which has a ridiculous retail price in Canada currently) and stocked, stored and potentially distributed to food banks and used for international aid programs as well as civil resiliency for future events.
Perhaps as well the surpluses couldn't be used to make better butter that could be readily spread or mixed?
This should be front page news....it is criminal that we dump milk while there is real, sustained hunger in our country. The answer is not allowing the USA to flood our aisles with their heavily subsidized milk products, but adopting sensible practices like the ones you suggested.
Hi Judy. The U.S is barely allowed to sell dairy products in Canada. Why? Because if they did, Canadian dairy products would have to be much, much cheaper to compete.
US dairy is highly subsidized so would not be a fair market and you would see our own dairy market get swallowed up by the US - foolish especially in the current atmosphere..... our quota system needs to be adjusted to bring our pruces down - not welcoming US subsidized dairy.
We'll never see the end of this because of Quebec. They want the dairy marketing board to stay and politicians, do not want to lose Quebec votes. It's pathetic and disgusting. It looks like politicians only care about staying in power rather than helping Canadians have a decent standard of living. It's sickening.
That virtually every politician in Canada supports the status quo on supply management is deeply depressing.
I know.

Thank you again.
A very concerned taxpayer
Thank you for reading.
Sign me up for local raw milk.
Bringing back 30gallons at a time from the USA is a lot of work. (That’s legal)
Yet illegal to buy from a local farmer who I drive past daily. It makes no sense.
Regulations is the US vary state to state and many times I am eating “pet food” raw butter, yogurt and kefir. 🤣
So silly as we *gasp* can get raw milk cheese in Canada.
If I wanted to start challenging the system to change, who do I contact Dr. Charlebois?
This is so wrong on so many levels.
Sir, where do I start?

Our problem is not the U.S. Our problem is us.
Plus, isn’t there a lot of hormones and antibiotics in US milk??
US dairy is highly subsidized so would not be a fair market and you would see our own dairy market get swallowed up by the US - foolish especially in the current atmosphere..... our quota system needs to be adjusted to bring our pruces down - not welcoming US subsidized dairy.
Maybe... US companies do not use the quota they now have. Milk is a very fragile commodity.
This is disgusting, and where I shop the price of milk has taken another jump.
Hopefully the US will help save Canadians again during the upcoming CUSMA trade talks and force these practices of the dairy cartel to an end.
I want to be the first to declare that Dr. Sylvain Charlebois did not kill himself by drowning in Quebec milk.
Maybe a tax break for milk processors to use the unwanted milk to make products for food banks would get companies started?
Can’t they make Yogurt or Cheese for the homeless?
Wouldn't want to upset QC by changing a system weighted in their favor. Votes over common sense, wins every time.
When will Canadians wake up to how much impact the dairy cartel has on the entire country?

Oh. But it’s the fault of Conservatives!!
And nobody has the balls to Eliminate the Cartel !!!
This has been going on for years.
